Standardized Field Sobriety Testing (SFST)

This course will teach officers the practical applications associated with Standardized Field Sobriety Testing (SFST). The SFST is a battery of three tests performed during a traffic stop in order to determine if a driver is impaired. The tests include the horizontal gaze nystagmus, the walk-and-turn, and the one-leg stand. Developed in the 1970s, these tests are scientifically validated and are admissible as evidence in court in a majority of states.

Employment Law & Regulations

This course introduces the principle laws and regulations affecting public and private organizations and their employees or prospective employees. Topics include fair employment practices, EEO, affirmative action, and employee rights and protections. Upon completion, students should be able to evaluate organization policy for compliance and assure that decisions are not contrary to law.

 

Civil Liability

This course covers liability issues for the criminal justice professional. Topics include civil rights violations, tort liability, employment issues, and other related topics. Upon completion, students should be able to explain civil trial procedures and discuss contemporary liability issues.

 

***This course is part of the Public Service Management Certificate program but is open for any Public Safety employee to participate. There is a textbook requirement that is not covered by N.C. Public Safety tuition waiver.*** 

Bicycle Patrol Procedures

This is a certification course that teaches officers the fundamental skills to effectively perform patrol duties on a bicycle. Students completing the classroom and practical exercises of this training will be eligible to obtain a certification from the private organization teaching the course. 

Police Law Institute

The Police Law Institute (PLI) is designed to provide the skills necessary to conduct enforcement activities associated with search warrants, warrantless searches, interviews, eyewitness identification, and nontestimonial identification orders. Course requirements, including content and textbooks, are authorized by the North Carolina Justice Academy (NCJA), and instructors must meet specific NCJA requirements.
